The Master! Part Six

Whew! Must have caught a backdraft because I was not really expecting to be done with this tonight. So here it is, the final installment (for the moment) of the Master series. John Simm played a wonderfully crazy incarnation of the character and I really hope to see him re-create the role again to face off against Matt Smith. I admit that I combined the two different looks that he employed, the Saxon suit and the bleached blonde hair from the later appearance. Enjoy!

Here is some of the steps leading up to the final too.

Working on The Master

I finally started working on John Simm as the Master and complete my series. Hopefully I will finish this during the week to post. Once that happens, I can then proceed to compositing all the actors into a companion to the 11 Doctors. Here is a screen shot of me working on it and eagle eye viewers will spot my inspirational video too.

Playing with (digital) ink

I have been really taken with Darwyn Cooke's artwork for some time now and found myself trying to emulate his brushwork but doing so in the digital realm. I think the simple shapes that he creates to define the form is so clean and simple and yet really elegant. I wish I knew the form as well as him to be this confident. Even tho my work winds up looking drasically different from his, I do find that I am always striving to find the form with shapes and then lighting it. At least I try. Here are some doodles of some tests I did with some spare time. The series of headshots at the bottom were all done with a different program. Illustrator, Photoshop and ArtRage. All the others were done in Photoshop.

I think that this is something that needs a LOT more exploration.

Ghost Rider. The Final

So here it is. The moment everyone loves best. The "reveal"! I like how it came out as I am pleased with the final "shape" of the figure. I am also very happy with how "hot" the flames look! Maybe I should not have been so lazy and actually drawn the motorcycle too tho. Hmmm....

Ghost Rider. Part Three

I love the inking stage. Have I mentioned that before. Odd considering my utter disdain for Illustrator back when I was in college and just out. I love it now!! Anyway, you can see some slight tweaks to the figure here as I made some changes right in the ink stage. I think the "shape" works better now.

On to the final painting stage!

Ghost Rider. Part Two

Really got carried away here in the Photoshop sketch. Just kept tweaking and tweaking it every so many minutes. Not any of it was done at once. More like here and there when I noticed something to change or just try. I like working like this, it seems very organic which is odd considering how most people still feel about digital art. I will say that there were very few layers being used actually. I like the looseness and energy in the piece.

Ghost Rider. Part One

So is anyone else excited to see the new Ghost Rider movie?? Did anyone else actually like the last one?? Just me? Wow. Don't misunderstand, I didn't love the film and I certainly don't think it ranks as one of my all time favorites, but I thought it stayed pretty true to the book and it was simply a fun movie regardless of Nicolas Cage. I actually loved the comic as a kid but I also remember how the covers were so much better than the art that was inside. Unless it was when he was a member of The Champions and John Byrne was doing the pencils!! I collected the updated book in the early '90's too but Danny Ketch just didn't thrill me the way Johnny Blaze did. Remember, the 1970's was THE time for motorcycle daredevils and Ghost Rider really did fill that niche quite nicely. I have to admit that I am re-watching the film as I started to doodle this.

I did a few really quick sketches right in Photoshop.

Here is where I started to get carried away with my thumbnail and progressed further still right in Photoshop.

Jekyll! Final.

So here it is. The day of the big reveal. Are you excited? Do you like me dragging my process out or would you rather I just do it all in one shot?? Doesn't really matter does it, as I am going to do what I want anyway. Is that bad?? No. This is my show.

Anyway, I hope you like it. I thought it was fun to do even if it is more than a bit bloody. Now we just have to sit back and see what Cory thinks of it.

Jekyll! Part Five

Once I got the flat colors in, I decided to try switching the dripping white to red. I figured the type will be white so the whole picture will still have a black, white and red scheme to it.

The ArtRage stage is always fun!

Stay tuned for the final tomorrow (I hope!)

Jekyll! Part Four.

Managed to get the inking done and composite it into the final piece. Time to start painting!

Jekyll! Part Three

Not really too much to show at this stage. I was really just fooling around with the background and how I wanted to go. I really went all out with the blood here. I figure with this it's go big or go home. If there was ever a time to really go overboard, this would be it. I figured subtle was not for this one. Plus it was a lot of fun!

I thought splitting the frame into black and white was a bit cliche to symbolize the split personality but what if I added a "dripping element" to it?? Hmmmmmm.......

Jekyll! Part Two.

So I was all fired up after pushing my head shot and quickly decided that I really should add the rest of the figure to the pic and keep the head. Maybe just change the vantage point and have you look up at him instead. I digitally drew this.

Armed with my new pose I quickly moved along and did another quick value study and started thinking ahead to what and where I wanted to go with it. I figured I would go a little bloody with this one.

Jekyll! Part One.

Here I go again. Posting away in instalments to drag out that the fact that I have something new to share. I had heard of this BBC program before and usually with it being mentioned in Doctor Who or Sherlock articles. This was also written by the brilliant Steven Moffat and it does not disappoint. I originally thought that it was merely a modern re-telling of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson classic just like Sherlock is. I was wrong! And I am mad at myself in waiting so long to check this program out. If you have not seen it already, go now and watch it. Watch it all!! James Nesbitt is absolutely amazing in the duel role!!

I originally just did a sketch on the computer to loosen up and then, as I frequently do, I got carried away and kept adding color and such to the sketch. This is what I got.

Stay tuned. More to come.
